The Truth of Rebirth

Whether one believes in or accepts the truth of rebirth or rejects it, the truth of its principle will continue to operate. We neither obliterate nor modify a "law" or principle by denying it or refusing to accept it. It is best to become acquainted with the facts, and at least know something of the laws under which we are living, and by which we are directed and controlled in our existence. There is nothing unreasonable nor difficult to accept in such a doctrine. As we look about us we find everywhere in nature this striving for perfection in a slow, persistent manner. We find no sudden process of creation or destruction, such as the theologian teach, but we do find, "Evolution.” Evolution is “the history of the progression of the Spirit in time.”

Everywhere, as we look about us we see varied phenomena in the universe, we realize that the path of evolution is a spiral. Each loop of the spiral is a cycle. Each cycle merges into the next, as the loops of the spiral are continuous, each cycle being the improved product of those preceding it and the creator of those more developed states which succeed it. The law is operating in this way; every time we start something, be it thought, word, or action, we create a certain cause which will someday materialize in a corresponding effect. Just when that effect will take place, no one can tell; it depends upon many circumstances, but it is unavoidably due, like a logical result in a mathematical problem.

If a person regrets a mistake, a sin, it is forgiven in the sense that there is always the possibility to make it right, to start a new positive cause. But the penalty for the wrong is also always there, and that penalty is impossible to avoid because it is our own creation, the effect of the cause we started which will and must SOMEDAY come back to us either in this life or upon rebirth. The past cannot be changed, we have to take it as it is. Our future is completely in our hands. We are reaping the past and sowing the future with every action we perform. If we start the right causes, it will take care of itself because of the law of Cause and Effect. When Jesus said: “Take therefore no thought for morrow, for the morrow will take thought for the things of itself; sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof,” He meant that we must do the right thing right now and the future will take care of itself because of the law, IT IS UNAVOIDABLE.

The Soul builds its body

It is well to note that people today in this life who suffer great pain and poverty that they are paying the penalty for past actions, for the law is true to itself. Each one of us is the product of millions of years of hard work. We have been through such experiences that if most of us could consciously remember our past, it would become one of the greatest curses humanity could have, because we would be so weighed down by the remembrance of these experiences. Fortunately we have it now behind us. Divine Wisdom has covered that sad past with a veil of forgetfulness. Otherwise, life on Earth with all its efforts, aims and endeavors, would become almost impossible, on account of the remorse for that past.

In each successive rebirth, it is given to men to start their lives anew. When we are born, the Soul in order to have a body attract all the materials that disintegrated at the death of its last incarnation. This is done, as we all know, through the mother by means of gestation. The Soul which is to be reborn sends its vibrations into the mother’s womb; there it touches, in the female egg, a unit of the male seed which had penetrated there; from there the life begins to unfold and the Soul begins to express itself more and more through that little seed, combining its own activities with those of the mother, and thus forming little by little the body which it will call its own.

The mother provides the building material through "breathing", eating, and so forth, and feeds the body of the future child; and the Soul continually attracts around its own activities the material elements provided by the mother, thus forming its future body. Thus we attract our old body and its atomic structures, and inherit our previous "diseases" and character; besides the physical conditions of our ancestors.

Often through misadventure the "Soul" is unable to attract all those elements necessary to complete its physical body, and this produces malformation and pain in the bones that cannot be traced. The Soul which is being reborn is not within the seed; it only overshadows it, combines its individual "life" force with that of the seed, making the seed grow and become the channel for its expression on this Earth plane. When the nine months of gestation are over, the body is completely formed and the child is born and becomes a separate entity, the Soul then acts through the child as through a separate, individual channel, not needing the mother any more.

The Soul expresses through the body of the child all its functions only when the child reaches the age of puberty, and is ready for procreation. When the Soul has expressed through the body all its functions, even the function of "procreation" ( which is a Divine quality, and one of the greatest the Soul possesses ), then only is it fully equipped to fulfill properly its mission on this Earth. The Soul then continually expresses itself through that body, the vehicle built by it for its own use. The greater the soul, the more deeply does he plunge; and though he may suffer exceedingly and all light will seem to have left him, he attains a nearness to his innermost that few who incarnate into the laps of luxury and indolence gain, for they receive but little of that greater experience of the world that would help them in their growth.

We often pray for forgiveness and wonder why we did certain things. There are people who have physically and mentally tortured us in other lives, and the people we have not treated justly in this life and for which we suffer acutely are those people who had once tormented us and these people we now repay. “As we judge so shall we be judged.”

The next important consideration is in regard to the cycles of rebirth. The question is often asked as to how many times man is reborn on earth, and when this process of development will end. The goal and purpose of the Soul is Self or God realization, and the perfecting of the physical form. The Soul is Eternal and Divine, the body must become co-equal with the Soul and as equally as indispensable. How many rebirths are necessary before one comes to this realization cannot be stated. It is all an individual effort, some learn faster than other, but we are all on the path of perfection. We have a choice to become conscious seekers of our lord God of Truth Within, whereby the need for further rebirths on earth is brought to an end, or lay back and Waite on nature, which is the snail’s pace evolution-slow, involving many rebirths. Therefore, you see that it is impossible to tell how many times each Soul must be reborn in physical form on this earth plane.

One point, however, in regard to the cycles of rebirth; it has been found that the Soul, reincarnates again on earth approximately every 144 years. In other words, 144 years has been found to be the average length of time between rebirths. This does not mean, however that there can be no exceptions to that average. Nominally, man should live in his physical body 144 years, and then the Soul would withdraw from the body, ascend to the Cosmic, and in a few days, or few hours descend again into a new body. But, man by his manner of living, and his continued violation of natural laws has gradually shortened his length of time on earth so that the average physical body reaches transition long before 144 years have passed.

But since he will not be reborn again until the 144th year, there will be a period of Cosmic residence for this Soul, during which the Soul will await the coming of the 144th year of rebirth. In other words, if a person lived to be 100 years of age on earth, and then passed through transition, the Soul would have a period of waiting in the Cosmic for 44 years until the normal time for rebirth. If a person lived to be 124 years of age on the earth the Soul would wait in the Cosmic 20 years. And a person who lived 80 years of earthly life would reside in the Cosmic for 64 years. Until man, the Soul, by contact with his own Lord God of Truth Within, has come to understand the cause of his affliction and sufferings, he can neither avoid, nor profit by them.
